Carvedilol (Coreg)

Carvedilol brand name: Coreg

What is Carvedilol?

Carvedilol is used for treating high blood pressure and heart failure. It can be used after a heart attack to improve recovery. The drug classification of carvedilol is “beta blocker”, meaning it blocks certain natural substances in the body, like epinephrine, that raise the heart rate, reducing strain on the heart. It is also an alpha blocker and widens blood vessels to allow blood to flow easier.

Dosage

This medication is typically taken twice daily with food to avoid dizziness and an upset stomach. Typically, carvedilol starting dosage is 6.25 mg twice daily. However, this may be increased depending on your condition and responsiveness to the treatment. The max dose of carvedilol is 25 mg or 50 mg twice daily depending on body weight.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These side effects occur in more than 1 in 100 people and are usually only mild, lasting just a few days. If any of these symptoms persist, speak to your healthcare provider or pharmacist:

  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea

  • Cold hands/feet

Serious Side Effects

These side effects, although rare, can indicate a serious health complication and require immediate medical attention:

  • Prolonged or frequent nosebleeds and easy bruising
  • Fever, sore throat, mouth sores, and flu-like symptoms
  • Difficulty breathing with a cough, swollen ankles, and chest pain
  • Yellowing of eyes and/or skin

Interactions

There are many medications with recorded interactions with carvedilol. Before you start this medication, speak to your healthcare provider about your current medications. While taking carvedilol, be sure to notify your healthcare provider if there is a change to any of your current medications or begin a new medication.

Carvedilol and Alcohol

Both this medication and alcohol temporarily lower blood pressure. Therefore, when they are combined you have a higher chance of dizziness, headaches, and lightheadedness. Heavy drinking is also known to raise your blood pressure. If you decide to drink, make sure to stay within the limit of 1 drink/day for women and 2 drinks/day for men.

Cost

Currently, the carvedilol price for 25 mg is on average $24.56 for 60 tablets.
