Vectical for Psoriasis

Vectical is the brand name for the generic drug Calcitriol and used to treat psoriasis, a chronic skin condition characterized by red, scaly patches on the skin. As a member of the topical Vitamin D analogs class, Vectical works uniquely compared to other psoriasis treatments. It's thought to regulate the growth and development of skin cells and calm the immune system, which can go awry in psoriasis. This dual action helps reduce the scaling and thickness of psoriatic patches and eases inflammation and discomfort.

Indications and Usage

Vectical is primarily indicated for mild to moderate psoriasis. Notably, it isn't typically used for severe cases, which may require more aggressive treatments. Psoriasis sufferers experience an overproduction of skin cells leading to thick, scaly patches. By moderating this overproduction, Vectical can alleviate these symptoms, improving skin appearance and comfort.

Dosage and Administration

Vectical, a topical ointment containing 3 mcg/g of the medication, comes in 100-gram tubes. It's suitable for adults and children aged 2 years and above.

For children between 2 to 6 years, the maximum allowable dose per week is one tube (100 grams). In adults and children aged 7 and older, up to two tubes (200 grams) per week can be used.

Before applying Vectical, gently cleanse the affected area with mild soap and lukewarm water, then pat dry with a clean towel. The ointment should be applied twice daily, in the morning and evening, and only to areas affected by psoriasis. Rub it in gently to ensure proper absorption, avoiding unaffected skin.

Using more than the recommended amount won't improve results and may heighten the risk of side effects. Avoid applying Vectical on the face or vaginal area. After application, wash your hands thoroughly, unless they are the area being treated.

Side Effects

Vectical may cause various side effects, ranging from common to serious. Common side effects include:

  • Increased calcium levels in the blood
  • Muscle weakness
  • Bone pain
  • Digestive issues like upset stomach, nausea, constipation, or vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Decreased appetite
  • Reduced energy levels
  • A metallic taste in the mouth

Serious side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, itching, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • High calcium levels, which may manifest as increased thirst and urination, nausea, vomiting, confusion, weakness, fatigue, and bone pain

Discontinue Vectical immediately if you experience:

  • Blistering, severe redness, itching, or irritation in the treated area
  • Worsening psoriasis symptoms or lack of improvement

Additionally, nursing mothers should avoid applying Vectical on or around the nipples to prevent ingestion by the infant.

Interactions

Vectical can potentially interact with specific medications and supplements. Notably, it may interact with calcium supplements or high doses of Vitamin D.

Additionally, Vectical might interact with other psoriasis medications and certain diuretics (commonly known as “water pills”), such as Hydrochlorothiazide. It's important to keep your healthcare team informed about all your current medications to avoid potential interactions.

Summary

Vectical represents a significant advancement in the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis. Understanding its proper use, potential side effects, and interactions can help patients and caregivers manage psoriasis more effectively. Always consult healthcare professionals for personalized advice and treatment plans tailored to individual needs.
