What is Truvada?

Truvada is a medication used for HIV prevention, also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). It is prescribed to those as higher risk of contracting HIV, such as those engaging in sexual activity with those with known HIV infection, inconsistent condom use, involved in the exchange of sexual activity for money or commodities, and those who use illicit drugs (by injection). It works to prevent an HIV infection if exposed in any high-risk situation.

Is there a generic version of Truvada?

Yes! There is a generic form of Truvada that goes by the name of the active ingredients, emtricitabine tenofovir.

What are the doses of Truvada?

For adults or children who weigh 35 kg (77 lbs) or more Truvada is available as in tablet form. Each tablet contains 200 mg emtricitabine and 300 mg tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. It should be taken once daily.

Is generic Truvada as effective?

Yes. Generic Truvada has the same active ingredients as the brand Truvada and has been proven by the FDA to be medically equivalent to the brand.

What is the cost of generic Truvada?

What is the alternative to Truvada?

There is sort of an alternative for Truvada, in some situations. Truvada is approved for anyone at risk of developing HIV through sex or injection. The alternative, Descovy, has the same purpose of preventing HIV, but is indicated for those at risk of developing HIV from sex and only for those who were assigned male sex at birth. This medication is also branded and can be very expensive.

What is the difference between Truvada and generic Truvada?

There is no medical difference between the generic and brand name Truvada. They both have the same active ingredients, emtricitabine and tenofovir. The generic medication has to be proven by the FDA to be equivalent in safety and efficacy to the brand name for it to be approved.

Is Truvada safe?

Truvada is safe for most patients. However, as with all medications, there are risks involved in taking it. There are possibilities of side effects or worsening medical conditions while taking Truvada. However, if taken exactly as prescribed, the possible risks are much less likely.

What are the side effects of Truvada?

There are some potential long-term side effects of Truvada, such as liver and kidney damage as well as a decrease in bone mineral density and immune system issues. The more short-term side effects include diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, and headache. None of the side effects, short or long term, are common, but they are risks.

Why can't Truvada be used for HIV treatment?

It can be! Just not in isolation. Truvada is often used in combination with other anti-retroviral medications, though there are anti-HIV medications that should not be taken in combination with Truvada, such as Atripla and Complera.

Is Truvada addictive?

No, Truvada is not an addictive medication.

Can I take Truvada with other medications?

You can take Truvada with some medications, but there are some that cannot be taken in combination with Truvada. The most important medications to avoid while on Truvada are didanosine, atazanavir, and the combination lopinavir/ritonavir. This list is not extensive, so it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking before you start Truvada.
