Get Generic ZITUVIMET® (sitagliptin/metformin) tablets for $160 for 60 tablets

  • Available in sitagliptin/metformin 50/500mg and 50/1000mg tablets
  • No insurance needed
  • Requires a prescription

ZITUVIMET is a combination treatment taken by mouth twice per day to help lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes alongside diet and exercise.

ZITUVIMET combines sitagliptin (ZITUVIO®), a DPP-4 inhibitor, with metformin, a class of medicine known as biguanides. This powerful combination results in better blood sugar control than either medication alone making it a great option to those looking to lower their HbA1C levels (hemoglobin A1C).

However, the retail cost of these type of diabetes medications can be prohibitively high, often exceeding $600 per month, making them inaccessible for many individuals.

About ZITUVIMET (sitagliptin/metformin)

ZITUVIMET is a combination pill that contains both metformin and sitagliptin. This combination when used together helps lower blood sugar levels more than either medication alone.

How Sitagliptin Works

Understanding how sitagliptin works begins with the body’s natural response to food.

When you eat, your body releases a hormone called GLP-1, which helps lower blood sugar levels by signaling the pancreas to produce more insulin and telling the brain you're full, which helps regulate appetite.

However, GLP-1 has a short lifespan in the bloodstream because it is quickly broken down by the DPP-4 enzyme. Sitagliptin works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, allowing GLP-1 to stay active in the bloodstream longer. This extended activity enhances GLP-1’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels and promote a sense of fullness.

What sets sitagliptin apart is its adaptability. It increases its blood sugar-lowering effects when levels are high and scales back when levels are normal, reducing the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This flexibility makes sitagliptin a safe and effective choice for managing blood sugar in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

How Metformin Works

Metformin helps to reduce blood sugar levels through several key mechanisms including:

  • Helps to lower blood sugar levels including A1C
  • Taken twice daily with a meal
  • Increasing uptake of sugars into your muscles, which helps improve insulin sensitivity

Unlike other medications for type 2 diabetes, metformin is less likely to cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because it does not alter insulin secretion. This is a key reason why metformin is often a first-line therapy for treating type 2 diabetes

One drawback of taking metformin is the risk of side-effects, notably GI (gastrointestinal) side effects. In clinical studies, patients taking metformin have reported that 30% of patients may experience some issues, with 5% switching to a different medication due to this. The most common side effects include diarrhea, though, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting are also experienced.

Importantly, metformin, and as a result, ZITUVIMET, also carries a black box warning for lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency and must be treated in the hospital. Sign of lactic acidosis include feeling cold in your hands or feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, having a slow or irregular heartbeat, feeling very weak or tired, having unusual (not normal) muscle pain, having trouble breathing, feeling sleepy or drowsy, having stomach pains, nausea, or vomiting. Stop taking metformin or ZITUVIMET right away and call your healthcare provider if you are experiencing these symptoms.
