Propranolol (Beta Blocker)
What is Propranolol?
Propranolol (brand name: Inderal) is used to treat high blood pressure. It also treats irregular heartbeats, anxiety, migraines, shaking/tremors, and chest pain caused by angina. This medication may also be given after a heart attack to improve the chance of survival.
Propranolol is a beta blocker. Beta blockers are a class of drug which block certain natural chemicals in the body, like epinephrine, from acting on the heart and blood vessels. This lowers the heart rate and reduces blood pressure and any strain on the heart.
How to Take Propranolol
This medication is typically taken 2–4 times per day. Typically, people take propranolol before bed and at each meal if taken 4 times per day. However, propranolol does not need to be taken with food as it is not known to upset the stomach.
This medication helps to prevent chest pain and migraine attacks and should be taken regularly, not just when symptoms arise.
